Description
Pan[orama] of Mattiato ranch. They have sunk 3 wells to 50 ft. ± and get good water - but very little of it. Are now putting new one 4 ft. wide and 30 to 40 long. Grow a few sweet potatoes, a squash or two, a few stalks of sugar cane, a hedge of Parkinsonia, a little grass for burros, a heavy storm fence surrounds the place. Woman on hill behind gathering feed for burros. Within the enclosure there are a few palms and some of the large Asclepias. A fair example of the extreme conditions of existence on this desert island. [Shantz travel journal, July 29, 1919]
