Interview with Armando Durazo

Armando Durazo, senior editor for El Paso Times and University of Arizona (UA) graduate, talks about his journalistic education in Tucson, both at the UA and Pima Community College (PCC), and how that compares to other journalism programs today. Durazo tells how the violence on the border has fluctuated over his 40 years in the profession, and how the high levels of violence in recent years defies everything he has ever witnessed. Discussing the effects on the local economy and public perception, Durazo touches on the challenges faced by the paper and the reporters and how his team has dealt with them. Self-identifying as a Chicano, Durazo notes the importance of having Latino journalists and others knowledgeable of the language, local history and culture to accurately report on the border.

Durazo cuenta como la violencia en la frontera ha fluctuado en sus 40 años en la profesión, y como sus niveles más altos de los últimos años desafía todo lo que ha presenciado. Ennumerando los efectos en la economía local y la percepción pública, Durazo aborda los retos que enfrentan los periodicos y periodistas y como su equipo ha lidiado con ellos. Idenficandose como Chicano, Durazo nota la importancia de tener periodistas Latinos y otros con dominio del idioma y conocimiento de la historia y cultura local para lograr reportajes precisos relacionados con la frontera.
