Description

Originally, treaties between Mexico and the United States provided for mutual navigation rights along the Rio Grande. Now, the river water is used primarily for domestic purposes and irrigation. As a result of the United States-Mexico water treaty of February 3, 1944, each country provides for the conservation, storage, and regulation of the Rio Grande's water, including the construction of two international dams. This is a bridge abutment to the old International Bridge between Brownsville and Matamoros.
