<text>This oral history, conducted in Tijuana and Chihuahua, Mexico, contains interviews with different individuals Dr. Cummings encountered while walking around the two cities. She first speaks to a group of cholas in Tijuana. The next interview was conducted five days later in Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico.

Dr. Cummings first speaks with a twenty-one-year-old taxi driver, who explains some elements of cholo style and its connection to the pachucos. She then talks with a young man named Luis on the street. He explains some characteristics of cholo style-–including hair, shoes, and clothes--but mentions that police often target people who look like cholos, which has reduced the number of people dressing that way. Luis discusses come of the confrontations or “broncas” between people from different barrios that he has witnessed and explains how fights break out. He talks about some additional cultural aspects beyond style, including slang, nicknames, handshakes, hand signs, and tattoos. He also talks about Cholas, their manner of dress, and their involvement in the barrios.

The interviewer asks men and women in the club what barrio they belong to, how they became part of it, and whether they had to fight another member of the barrio to obtain membership. Different people in the club mention gangs from Chihuahua, Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico and California gangs. Multiple interviewees explain that not all barrios and not all cholos fight, and that many are calmer, but they are still stereotyped by non-cholos. Other interviewees, including women, describe fights they have been in with other barrios, and discuss some of the customs associated with fighting.

<text>Dr. Cummings interviews a thirty-eight-year-old male from San Antonio, Texas, who she described as a “professional male.” The interviewee recounts his childhood and his experiences with pachucos in San Antonio. He recalls that it was common to belong to a group or gang of pachucos, most of whom were high school dropouts. He recalls several situations when he was confronted by pachucos and had to give away his belongings in order to avoid being beat up. He was approached to join a gang at one point, but he declined due to the gang violence he had witnessed at school. However, the interviewee also points out there were positive elements to the subculture, saying, “A lot of good, natural leadership went into the gangs.” He points out that there was no specific economic purpose behind the gangs and that “it was more turf battles; allowing no intrusion into your neighborhood.” The interviewee reflects on the changes in geographic mobility between barrios. He notes that during his childhood, youths would not visit other barrios for parties or social gatherings like they did at the time of the interview.

<text>A sixty-nine-year-old woman born and raised in Tucson, Arizona talks about her life history and experiences. She begins by talking about her parents, who were from Michoacán, Mexico, and who moved around looking for work before settling in Tucson. The interviewee was born in 1920 in Tucson at home. Her father worked with the Southern Pacific Railroad in Tucson and her mother worked for a short time with the Laos family. She also explains that she dropped out of high school to help her parents make ends meet. Further along in the interview, she comments on the eviction of Mexican residents by landlords in the downtown area in the 1950s to make way for lawyers and artists, and mentions the names of several dancehalls and businesses that used to be in the downtown area. These businesses include: the Blue Moon, La Alianza, and The Riverside. She also recounts what courtship was like in the 1940s, and talks about the dynamics between men and women at dances and parties. Her husband was a pachuco, so she explains style trends and discusses how pachucas dressed and were distinguished from other women.

He makes a variety of observations about pachucos, drawing on his experiences while citing articles and books about the topic to converse about the culture with Dr. Cummings. He mentions that there is very little English spoken on the tape, so he wonders if these pachucos were originally from Mexico. He also observes the dynamic between the two men on the tape and speculates about the nature of their relationship. The interviewee talks about pachucos’ place in society, how they were treated by the police and media, and about the generational gap between them and the generation that came before.

<text>In this second interview, a male born in Brownsville, Texas in 1926, discusses his life experiences further. He begins by speaking more about his youth. As a child, since he often helped his parents pick crops, he was not able to receive a traditional education. He became involved in “La Pachucada” by being around older boys and wanting to be like them. As a teenager, he had a job picking tomatoes and often slept in parks or bus stops to avoid having to return home and continue enduring abuse from his stepfather. Later on, he had a job as a janitor in the courthouse. He talks about pachuco style, saying that he would grease up his hair to prepare for dances. He also speaks about life after the war, mentioning his marriage, children, and sobriety.</text>

Ms. Arrieta explains that at around 11 at night, she heard voices on the street and a woman screaming. She looked out the window and saw a woman, who she describes as a chola, on top of a man, punching and hitting his face while he tried to guard himself with his arms. There were four cholos and three cholas surrounding them, watching. The women had weapons, a stick, and rocks. The women ran off before the police arrived, who eventually ended up taking three of the men into custody.

After going down to the street and speaking with the police and other witnesses, Ms. Arrieta learned that the man had tried to take advantage of the woman, and she had managed, with the help of her friends, to defend herself and escape.</text>

Louie was born in 1927 in Jerome, Arizona and after some time in the Navy, he moved back and worked in the Jerome mines. He recounts his youth as a pachuco, but notes that the culture started earlier in the 1930s among braceros coming from Mexico to work in the United States. Louie goes into detail about some of the aspects of pachuco fashion and defines terminology. Louie also talks about caló, calling it a street language. He then breaks down some of the differences between pachucos and cholos and talks about treatment by police and media. Later in the interview, Ida tells of her experiences growing up working to help her parents pay for her brother’s medical bills. She discusses how she learned caló from her husband, and how women were involved in the culture as well.</text>

She starts by telling the story of her birth because she was born in Hermosillo just months before the Mexican Revolution started, on the day the city was throwing a parade for Francisco Madero. She continues by discussing her family history, going back to her grandparents, who were also from Sonora and owned land. The interviewee shares where she went to school, how she met her husband, and how they made a living. She also recounts some experiences she and her close friends and family had with pachucos, such as a robbery and a mugging.

<text>Ghost Diary was produced by Maureen Cummins in the winter of 2003, with typographic assistance from Kathy McMillan and metalwork by Gary Dodge. The text of the book is based on a handwritten letter discovered by the artist in the archive of Weir Farm in Wilton, Connecticut, during a residency in the spring of 2001. The letter was written in 1807 by a former Revolutionary War officer, Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Rhea, to his children on the anniversary of his wife's death. The images that accompany the text are original vintage glass negatives that date from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book was produced in an edition of twenty-five. The typefaces used in the book were New Century Schoolbook and Kunstle Script. All borders and text were letterpress-printed on black Stonehenge and the image were reproduced using color xerography. The list of names and torture and execution devices were compiled over a period of several years, as were the vintage photographs used to illustrate the book. Femmes Fatales was printed in edition of fifty numbered copies, with copy number 1 containing the original photographs. Edition 31/50. [Signed by author]</text>
