This home over 200 years old. At Wynberg we visited the vineyard and home of Henry Cloete - Alphen (farm). This fine old Dutch house with its floors of yellowwood and ceiling, and walls of teak from India. Walls thick stonework, and steps and grounds beautifully old. A progressive vineyard - looks in winter much like California. A green cover crop to turn under consists mostly of Erodium cicutarium, cockle, Oxalis and ... Hilarium, looks much like the California residual cover. (It differs in having no plants of Malva robustifolia.) The vines are trimmed back and each row supported on one or two wires. Here wild flowers and cultivated are sold - very cheap and in great quantity. Most of them are gathered from the adjacent mts. or hills and swamps and carried in by wagons or in big baskets. These flower sellers were rapidly exterminating the wild flowers and certain restrictions have been placed on them - however they collect almost everything since Dr. Marloth found a new species protected by law.
