Following the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, the Federal government started surveying the West with the intention of selling as much land as possible to the public. The system used divided land into thirty-six single-square-mile sections. Each section equaled 640 acres or one square mile. Thirty-six squares made up one township. This system is still in use today. This 1905 map offers an excellent example of the acquisition of land under this system by the Empire Cattle Company.

Map depicting the battle on the hill of Barrabás, near Zirándaro, now in the state of Guerrero. The map shows where Don Vicente Guerrero, Commander in Chief of the Revolutionary troops of the South set up his fortifications from which his troops defeated the royalist troops in the battle for Mexico's Independence from Spain. The map is a schematic depiction of the buttresses built on a steep and mountainous landscape. Done in watercolor and ink, the map measures 31 X 43 cm. Mapa del Cerro de Barrabás, cerca de Zirándaro, hoy en el estado de Guerrero. El mapa representa donde Don Vicente Guerrero, Jefe Comandante de las tropas Revolucionarias del sur, instaló sus fortalecimientos de los cuales derrotó a las tropas monárquicas durante la batalla por la independencia de México de España. El mapa es una representación esquemática de las fortificaciones en un paisaje montañoso escarpado, pintado en acuarela y tinta, y mide 31 X 43 cm.
