Ninfa Deandar Martinez, Director General of El Mañana newspaper in Nuevo Laredo, talks about her father, founder over 90 years ago of El Mañana, and about her upbringing and that of her children. Touching on the murder of her editor, Roberto Mora García, and the suspicious death of her youngest son, Deandar reminisces about past historical events, and declares herself proud to call on corrupt politicians,denouncing drug traffickers as the "black hand" in Mexico.
Ninfa Deandar Martínez, Directora General del diario El Mañana, platica sobre su padre, fundador del periódico hace más de 90 años, sobre su juventud, y sobre el legado que están dejando sus hijos. Manuel de la Rosa, reporter for the High School Sports Magazine, talks about his career along the border and how the situation has changed over the years. Describing the kind of crimes taking place in the area and how it is hard to trust their sources since they lie to protect their lives. Concerned that what goes on in the border is not being reported accurately, he laments that a lot of information is coming from researchers instead of journalists that are on the ground. Recounting some of the gruesome scenes he has reported on, de la Rosa talks about the lack of support and emotional drain that are typical in his profession.
Manuel de la Rosa, reportero con la revista High School Sports, habla sobre su carrera como reportero fronterizo y del cambio en el área atravez de los años. Describiendo el tipo de crímenes que se llevan a cabo en el área y lo dificil que es confiar en la veracidad de sus fuentes, las cuales mienten para protejer sus vidas. Preocupado de que las noticias fronterizas no se están reportando con precisión, él lamenta que la información viene de investigadores académicos en vez de periodistas trabajando en el centro de los eventos. Haciendo un recuento de las escenas grotescas que ha presenciado como reportero, de la Rosa habla de la falta de apoyo y el desgaste emocional típicos de su profesión.

As director of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas at the University of Texas, Rosental Alves discusses his organization’s work in Mexico. Alves describes the situation in México as a crisis of violence and the need to assist journalists with their safety. The professor also shares that the Knight Center not only works with journalists but with other organizations while deliberating the differences of their work. Despite the efforts of organizations helping to advocate for better policy to protect journalists and freedom of expression, Alves asserts that the work of Knight Center is to train and educate journalists in Latin America.
Como director del Centro Knight Para El Periodismo en Las Américas con cede en la Universidad de Texas, Rosental Alves comenta sobre el trabajo de su organización en México. Alves describe la situación en México como una crisis de violencia y habla sobre la necesidad de dar ayuda a los periodistas con su seguridad. El profesor describe la manera en que el Centro Knight trabaja con periodistas y con otras organizaciones, comparando la diferencia entre el trabajo que cada una desempeña. A pesar de los esfuerzos de organizaciones que abogan por planes de acción que protejan tanto a periodistas como a la libertad de expresión, Alves afirma que el trabajo realizado en el Centro Knight es principalmente dedicado al entrenamiento y educación de periodistas en Latinoamérica.

Hector Hugo Jimenez, general editor in chief for Verbo Libre, along with its free morning paper, Media Hora, talks in detail about his work as part of Heriberto Deandar Robinson's editorial team, noting that their reporters enjoy some of the highest salaries in the area, which allows them to not become involved with organized crime. Jimenez describes how border journalism functions by censuring itself and publishing news that has been given green light by the dominant groups of the area. Jimenez claims that it is possible to maintain their integrity and not fall into corruption as journalists by staying at the margins of news that could endanger their lives.

Armando Durazo, senior editor for El Paso Times and University of Arizona (UA) graduate, talks about his journalistic education in Tucson, both at the UA and Pima Community College (PCC), and how that compares to other journalism programs today. Durazo tells how the violence on the border has fluctuated over his 40 years in the profession, and how the high levels of violence in recent years defies everything he has ever witnessed. Discussing the effects on the local economy and public perception, Durazo touches on the challenges faced by the paper and the reporters and how his team has dealt with them. Self-identifying as a Chicano, Durazo notes the importance of having Latino journalists and others knowledgeable of the language, local history and culture to accurately report on the border.
