Raul Hector Castro

Ambassador to Argentina

President Jimmy Carter appointed Raul H. Castro U.S. Ambassador to Argentina in 1977. At the time of Castro’s appointment, the Argentine economy suffered runaway inflation and the government was widely accused of human rights abuses. During his time as ambassador, Castro succeeded in maintaining friendly relations between the United States and Argentina while putting pressure on the Argentine government to improve its human rights record.
