Environmental Protection
As Secretary of the Interior, Stewart L. Udall helped to establish fifty-six new National Wildlife Refuges. His love for the environment was shared with First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson, who was an active participant at many events with Stewart and Lee Udall.
Secretary Udall dedicated four new National Parks and six new National Recreation Areas during his tenure, with only one failed initiative (the Tocks Island Dam project in New York). These included California's Redwood National Park, the Georgia-to-Maine Appalachian National Scenic Trail, and North Cascades in Washington, among many others.
In addition, Secretary Udall's work would spearhead the development of the Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) center at the U.S. Geological Survey; EROS would utilize NASA satellites to map Earth from space and show physical changes to the planet.
