Digitization Day 2019
The second Family & Community Archives Day took place on October 5, 2019 from 10-2 at Special Collections. Members of the community were invited to bring in up to ten items to have scanned for free by preservation specialists. Participants were able to keep their originals as well as took home a USB drive with digital copies of the images and documents. Family Archives Kits were also given out to those who attended.
Guest speakers at the event included:
Lisa Duncan, assistant librarian and the collection management archvist for Special Collections, who discussed how to preserve family materials at home. Assistant Professor Anita Huizar-Hernández, UA Department of Spanish and Portuguese, who spoke about the importance of family photographs and documents for teaching and research, and a video interview with Professor Lydia Otero, UA Department of Mexican American Studies, highlights the importance of oral histories in building community history.
Representatives from local community archives included: Jamie A. Lee, Arizona Queer Archives; Betty Villegas, the Mexican American Museum at the Sosa Carrillo House; and Barbara Lewis and Debi Chess Mabie, the Dunbar Pavilion: An African American Arts & Culture Center.
